Stadtteilhaus Coerde: Participation and encounters for all

Zeichnung, wie das Stadtteilhaus am Ende aussehen soll.

The laying of the foundation stone in May 2025 marked the start of a project that will change life in Coerde forever: The new district house. In the Münster district, which has already experienced many ups and downs in its still young history, a place is being created that invites everyone to participate and contribute. The decisive impetus came from the citizens themselves; now the desire for a central meeting place, where the services previously scattered across the district are brought together, is taking shape.

A sustainable house for everyone

The district house brings together everything Coerde needs under one roof: From advisory and educational services and the citizens' office to the music school, district library, pediatrician's practice and job center. In other words, it is a genuine multifunctional building that is deliberately geared towards the diverse life situations of the people. The new building also sets standards in terms of sustainability: it meets the zero-emission building standard, is heated by a combination of district heating and an air-to-water heat pump and generates electricity via photovoltaic systems on the green roof areas. Visitors to the building can look forward to a green oasis: the roof terrace, which offers relaxation in the middle of everyday urban life.

Diverse, young, challenged

Coerde was virtually created on the drawing board in the 1960s. In a short space of time, over 2,300 apartments were built in the north of Münster, mainly in high-rise buildings. Today, around 11,000 people live here. More than a quarter of them are under the age of 20 and over half have a history of migration. Around 100 nations are at home in Coerde - a young, diverse, but also challenged district in which many families have to make do with limited resources. This is precisely why it is so important that the new district house offers services that reach children, young people and their families in particular - low-threshold, supportive and close to everyday life. And it is a place that also creates space for citizens with a history of migration to organize themselves.

Key project for Coerde

The district house is much more than just a building. It is part of a package of measures that will open up new prospects for people in Coerde. When the foundation stone was laid, primary school pupils also formulated their wishes for their district in a time capsule. The district house can fulfill some of these wishes: As a center for integration and cultural exchange, a place of learning, an advice center and a meeting place, it has a key function. Here, residents can find a place to go that is open to everyone, regardless of religion, gender, age or cultural background. A place that connects.
