Steinfurt is reimagining mobility—for climate-friendly commuting in the region

Mobilstation mit Hinweistafel in Steinfurt

Through a comprehensive package of measures, the county seat of Steinfurt is improving conditions for eco-friendly commuter travel. Thanks to funding from the ERDF/JTF program in North Rhine-Westphalia, modern transit hubs and new bicycle routes are being created. The goal is to make switching to sustainable modes of transportation easier and more appealing—for local residents and people throughout the region. The measures stem from the mobility concept for the county seat of Steinfurt and are designed to facilitate the use of sustainable transportation in everyday life.

Mobility hubs connect trains, buses, and bicycles

A central component of the project is the expansion of the Borghorst and Burgsteinfurt train stations, as well as the Mühlenstraße bus stop, into modern mobility hubs. In the future, different modes of transportation will be better integrated there. Plans include bike lockers, electric vehicle charging stations, Wi-Fi hotspots, digital information systems, and an app-based reservation system for bike parking facilities. This will create attractive interfaces between trains, buses, bicycles, car-sharing, and other mobility options.

New bike routes strengthen the region

In addition to the mobility hubs, Steinfurt is investing in the expansion of bike infrastructure. Plans call for closing a major gap on the international bike route between Zwolle, Enschede, and Münster. To this end, the existing “Nünningsweg” bike route will be extended and connected to other bike path networks. The new infrastructure improves accessibility within the region and creates attractive alternatives to motorized private transportation.

The “Sustainable Commuter Transportation in Steinfurt” project exemplifies how municipal mobility concepts can be implemented with the help of EU and state funding. These coordinated measures promote climate-friendly mobility, reduce traffic-related emissions, and strengthen the region’s sustainable development. The improvements benefit not only the residents of Steinfurt but also commuters from the entire surrounding area.
