This was not always the case. The quality of the facility had suffered greatly in recent years. Many areas were sealed and numerous play equipment and design elements were no longer usable. At the same time, the increasing development and densification of the surrounding area meant that the need for a functioning playground was becoming ever greater. The city relied on participation from the outset for the redesign: Children, young people and adults from the neighborhood were able to contribute their ideas, and the site management was always approachable. Anticipation grew during child-friendly tours of the construction site, and discussions with residents strengthened cohesion. The result is a space for community. With wheelchair-accessible play equipment and inclusive play options, such as a floor-level playhouse with an inclusive slide, children with special needs also feel welcome.
Importance for the region: social and green infrastructure
The redesigned playground has not only created a protected open space for younger and older children. It is also a major step towards green infrastructure. By planting new trees, creating flowering meadows on old asphalt paths and unsealing large concrete block paving areas, the new playground is a role model for combining ecological and social goals in urban areas.
