Grüner Ring Mitte – A Neighborhood Park for the Climate, Community, and the Future in Duisburg
In the Hochfeld district of Duisburg, the “Grüner Ring Mitte” is taking shape as a forward-looking park that combines climate-resilient green spaces with a variety of recreational, sports, and social spaces. As a central component of sustainable urban development, the Grüner Ring Mitte—located between Sedanstraße and Rheinhauser Straße—is a significant part of the green corridors that separate residential neighborhoods from industrial areas in downtown Duisburg, thereby providing recreation, environmental quality, and a pleasant living environment for residents. The new park strengthens a neighborhood characterized by dense development, heat islands, and a low proportion of private green spaces. Accessible to all via a well-designed network of paths, it serves as a green axis leading to the “Zukunftsgarten RheinPark”—part of the International Garden Exhibition (IGA 2027 Ruhr Region)—and to the new residential area RheinOrt.
Green Space Between the Neighborhood and the Region
The project idea arose from the goal of better connecting Duisburg-Hochfeld with the Rhine and the surrounding urban fabric. Covering approximately 67,000 m², the Grüner Ring Mitte connects to existing green spaces, expands upon them, and makes the urban environment more open, safer, and more resilient to climate change. In addition to new play and sports areas, the project will create gathering places, picnic areas, and amenities for all generations, as well as high-quality natural spaces that promote biodiversity, serve as roaming and refuge areas for animals, and help cool the built-up areas. The Grüner Ring Mitte not only improves the urban climate but also strengthens social participation and enhances the quality of life in a multicultural neighborhood.
Connection to the IGA 2027
As a link to the “Zukunftsgarten RheinPark” in Duisburg, the Grüner Ring Mitte is also an important project in relation to the International Garden Show (IGA 2027 Ruhr Region). The future basic structure of the Green Ring is derived from the concept of the three “park zones” of the IGA 2027: Climate Forest, Open Center, and Neighborhood Park. In this way, Duisburg-Hochfeld becomes part of a forward-looking, regionally interconnected green space concept.
