Revierparks - future and home

Auf einer kleinen, schwimmenden Plattform in einem See, um dessen Ufer herum Bäume wachsen, sitzt eine Person direkt am Wasser. Zwei weitere Personen gehen Hand in Hand über die Plattform und schauen auf den See.

There are five "district parks" in the middle of the Ruhr metropolitan area: Mattlerbusch, Vonderort, Nienhausen, Gysenberg and Wischlingen. They were created between Duisburg and Dortmund in the 1970s to create a natural counterbalance to the industrial Ruhr region. A park concept with lush nature and a colorful range of leisure activities emerged from the historical idea of public gardens. Thanks to their proximity to residential areas and easy accessibility, the parks have developed into central and important axes of life in recent decades, with a high level of acceptance by the people of the Ruhr region.

A revitalization programme

However, even parks get on in years and need new impetus. The Ruhr Regional Association has received almost 28 million euros in funding from the NRW ERDF programme for the revitalization of the five green spaces under the title "Revierparks 2020". The overarching aim of the project was to offer as many people as possible attractive leisure opportunities and to create ecological and social focal points that bring people together: Experiencing nature, greater biodiversity, an increased quality of life for all and an extensive repertoire of environmental education opportunities.

The overriding premise in the construction and renovation of sports and play facilities and the design of water and leisure facilities was to create free offers for all and to break down existing barriers for people with impairments. The growing understanding of the importance of nature and the desire for sustainable, species-promoting green spaces made the revitalization of unused areas and the reforestation of existing green spaces another milestone in this project.

Five parks with different focal points

Each individual park has been given its own individual character and each Revierpark has its own motto and focus:

  • Mattlerbusch - A day's vacation. Here in the Revierpark in Duisburg, it's all about games and activities for everyone
  • Vonderort - Park in motion. Test your skills at many sports stations and in the latest sports at the Revierpark in Oberhausen
  • Nienhausen - The water park. Playgrounds, sports fields and green spaces are all about water and can be found in the Revierpark in Gelsenkirchen
  • Gysenberg - Nature and Tivoli. Let yourself be enchanted by the many offers at unique places in the Revierpark in Herne
  • Wischlingen - experience the park, learn about nature. Experience the elements of nature on land and water at the Revierpark in Dortmund
