BATTL³ – Innovation Hub for Battery Technology in Münster

With BATTL³, Technologieförderung Münster GmbH (TFM) is implementing another strategic component of BatteryCityMünster in North Rhine-Westphalia, the “Land of Energy.” A state-of-the-art research and development building for companies and innovations in the field of battery technology is being constructed at the Münster Science Park. The goal is to establish a high-performance ecosystem in Münster that strengthens innovation, technology transfer, and regional value creation along the battery value chain. The focus is particularly on technology-oriented companies, startups, and scale-ups, which are expected to translate new solutions into marketable applications more quickly. BATTL³ creates optimal conditions for collaboration between industry, academia, and application-oriented development, further strengthening Münster’s position as an international BatteryCity.

Infrastructure as the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer

BATTL³ will be a modern, purpose-built facility with approximately 1,600 square meters of usable space. Equipped with chemical laboratories, hazardous materials storage facilities, modern ventilation systems, and office spaces, it will meet the latest standards. The infrastructure specifically provides space for companies in fields such as battery materials, cell chemistry, sustainability, safety, and recycling, thereby supporting innovation and technology transfer within the BatteryCityMünster ecosystem. Your advantage: At BATTL³, companies will be able to collaborate closely—even in the same physical space—with partners from the academic community, including the university-based battery research center MEET, the Helmholtz Institute Münster, the Fraunhofer Institute for Battery Cell Research and Production (FFB), and IWARU at Münster University of Applied Sciences. The close proximity between research, development, and businesses creates key conditions for transforming new ideas into marketable applications more quickly.

Such specialized research and development facilities are crucial for building a high-performance innovation ecosystem: Such infrastructures can only be realized with public support and through experienced developers and operators such as TFM. Funding from the ERDF thus creates crucial conditions for innovation, technology transfer, and new value creation in North Rhine-Westphalia.

A Significant Contribution to the Energy Transition and European Value Creation

BATTL³ strengthens BatteryCityMünster as an internationally recognized hub for energy storage technologies and supports the development of a resilient European battery value chain. The project provides opportunities for new entrepreneurship, creates jobs, and supports the development of innovative technologies along the battery value chain. By combining research, technology transfer, and entrepreneurial development, BATTL³ provides strong impetus for sustainable growth, climate-neutral industrial processes, and Europe’s technological independence. In this way, the project makes an important contribution to the energy transition in North Rhine-Westphalia and Europe.
