Energy-efficient modular schools

The refurbishment backlog at schools is considerable. With the "Energy-efficient modular schools" funding program, the European Union and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are supporting local school authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia to quickly renovate their school buildings, reduce energy costs and make an important contribution to local climate protection.

Funding is provided for particularly efficient new replacement buildings in modular construction on the grounds of schools in need of renovation. Modular construction allows for less disruption to school operations than conventional construction methods. Eligible for funding are projects by schools run by local authorities that meet the ambitious "Efficiency Building 40" standard. Buildings meet this standard if they only require 40 percent of the energy of a reference building.

Funding is provided for investment projects to implement the replacement building to the Efficiency Building 40 standard in accordance with the Efficiency Building 40 certificate or an existing energy concept, in particular:

• in the area of building envelope and construction technology,
• in the area of building technology,
• in the area of building systems technology or
• environmental measures that are necessary as part of the construction of the building. The more detailed specification is defined in section 5.4.2 of the module school guidelines.
