Defense.Tech.NRW
The European Union and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are specifically strengthening innovations for civil and military defense. Funding is provided for high-tech solutions and dual-use technologies that contribute to the defense capability and resilience of Germany and Europe and at the same time enable economic value creation in NRW.
In the context of a changing global security architecture, the EU and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are supporting projects for the development, validation and scaling of defense technologies and dual-use applications as part of the ERDF/JTF NRW 2021-2027 programme. The aim is to expand key technological competencies, reduce critical dependencies and close gaps in European value creation networks.
Many defense tech innovations originally come from civilian research and applications as dual-use innovations or can be used there. In this respect, greater networking and interlinking of civil and military application-oriented research and development is seen as having considerable potential.
Reference to civil and military defense
Funding is provided for applied research and experimental development projects with clear application relevance to civil and/or military defense. The focus is on market-oriented products, processes and services, for example in the areas of
- artificial intelligence,
- autonomous land, air and sea systems,
- cyber security,
- sensor technology and
- electronics,
- networked reconnaissance and information systems,
- new materials and manufacturing processes,
- space and hypersonic technologies,
- training and simulation systems and
- technologies for the protection of critical infrastructures and civil defense.
Basic research is not funded.
In addition, measures for technology transfer, validation and demonstration in real or realistic environments as well as investments in research, testing and development infrastructures are supported. The prerequisite is conclusive project and exploitation planning with reliable statements on application scenarios, economic potential and continuation beyond the funding period.
