Young, innovative companies with a business model focused on the common good—so-called “common good enterprises”—play an important role in addressing sustainable, environmental, and social challenges. By combining economically viable entrepreneurial approaches with social concerns, these companies foster social and environmental innovations. Startups are key drivers in applying technological solutions to social goals and in developing business models for climate and environmental protection or resource efficiency. In doing so, they make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the economy, the environment, and society. 

The “Boost4Impact.NRW” funding call is designed to provide increased support to startups pursuing public-interest goals as they establish themselves in the market. This is because young public-benefit enterprises differ from conventional, primarily profit-oriented startup models—for example, in terms of beneficiaries, market orientation, or legal structures—and face particular challenges during the startup process and beyond. Relevant studies indicate, for example, a greater need for support as well as obstacles to raising capital.

Newly established or young micro-enterprises with a business model oriented toward the public good are to receive support through this program—and specifically through the following funding categories—during the critical phase of raising capital, acquiring business partners, and, more broadly, during the phase of establishing a foothold in the market. 

To support market consolidation, necessary project-related expenses for contracting services from external third parties will be funded: Investments in tangible and intangible assets and accompanying coaching services required for the development and introduction of public-benefit-oriented products, services, and manufacturing processes.
